Dealing with the symptoms of low testosterone (low T) can be frustrating and confusing, especially when you go through it alone. For some men, the signs of a dip in testosterone are weight gain, a decrease in muscle mass, fatigue, and hair loss. Clients say that the diagnosis makes them feel like they aren’t themselves anymore.

Too often, men spend years grappling with the symptoms of hypogonadism, not knowing there is a solution. Fortunately, treatment options like testosterone injections have become more popular since gaining FDA approval in the mid-1990s.

Due to the success of testosterone injections, the NY Times reported that the number of middle-aged men in T therapy has tripled since 2001.

At Renew Vitality LA, we specialize in educating men about the causes of low T and all their options for dealing with unwanted symptoms to help to restore balance.

Low T: The Causes

The healthy range for T levels in adult men is between 300 ng/dL to 1,000 ng/dL. One of the most common reasons for T levels to drop below 300 ng/dL, and for men to be diagnosed with hypogonadism, is aging.

Researchers have found that men can start losing 1% of total T levels each year once they turn 30. While that might not initially sound like much in the short-term, it compounds exponentially over time.

Age is just one of the factors that slow down T production. Direct trauma to the testes or head can dramatically decrease T levels years after the initial incident. One study found that many MMA fighters use some form of testosterone replacement therapy due to the prevalence of injury and steroid abuse within the sport.

T production is a complex process that also requires a healthy hypothalamus and pituitary gland to sustain normal levels. Secondary hypogonadism is a specific form of low T, in which the brain fails to signal the testes to produce T cells due to a malfunction of either the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland.

In some cases, T production becomes so low that men also experience a drop in sperm count or cessation of sperm production altogether.

Even though secondary hypogonadism can be caused by trauma, it’s also a congenital condition, meaning some men are born with it. The pituitary gland can also malfunction due to tumors, cysts, radiation, or infectious diseases like mumpsHIV, and AIDS.

Men can also develop low T as a side effect of medical intervention methods or therapies used to cure health issues. Chemotherapy can also cause low T in adult male cancer patients as well as infertility.

Opioids are regularly prescribed to treat chronic pain; however, some men can develop opioid-induced androgen deficiency (OPIAD), a condition that slows T production, diminishes sex drive, causes mood swings, and weight gain.
