Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body. They operate as an elaborate game of telephone; their production and processing rely on feedback signals to work properly. They communicate with tissues and cells to regulate essential bodily functions like growth, sexual development, and metabolism.
Testosterone (T) is one of the most important hormones in men. It regulates libido, bone mass, body fat composition, muscle mass, red blood cell production, and sperm production. Declining T levels can cause a series of mental and physical changes. Clients suffering from low testosterone (low T) often report that they don’t feel like themselves anymore.
At Renew Vitality, we work with men all over the country who are interested in the ways hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can either treat or prevent the symptoms of hormone deficiencies. We also work with clients looking to optimize current T levels to support a healthier, more active lifestyle.
Testosterone and Ageing
In the womb, male fetuses begin producing testosterone early. Researchers have found the presence of T cells in fetuses within the second trimester of pregnancy to regulate healthy brain development.
It has been found that male testosterone production changes during the course of a day, and throughout their lives. Seven-year-olds experience an increase in testosterone, which triggers a growth spurt. As kids, boys typically have T levels between 7-20 ng/dL, then T cells wane.
Before the start of puberty, most boys experience a huge spike in T to support the development of strong bones, ramp up red blood cell production, and increase calcium production. T levels can be between 7-800 ng/dL for most 12 to 13-year-old boys.
During late adolescence and early adulthood, T production is at its highest. The average range for T levels in this age range is 240 – 1,200 ng/dL. For most men, around their 30th birthday, is when hormone levels start to decline. Men can lose anywhere from 1-3% of their T levels every year after 30.
Aging can adversely impact testosterone production. Researchers at The Atlantic found that 13 million American men over the age of 45 had low T; however, 90% of them go undiagnosed. It’s common for men to attribute the changes caused by a diminishing level of T, as the consolation prize for getting older. In reality, HRT could be remarkably improving their quality of life.
Hormones are complex. For some clients, T levels under 300 ng/dL are normally accompanied by symptoms like hair loss, fatigue, low libido, and weight gain; however, everyone is different. It’s completely normal to notice unwanted changes in your body, but still have levels within the normal range. If you notice symptoms, it’s important to work with a qualified physician to diagnose the source and create an effective treatment plan.
While hormone replacement therapy is often prescribed to men diagnosed with low T for its amazing benefits, that doesn’t mean it can’t also help men with T levels within the normal range as well. Hormone replacement therapy can help men manage their weight, mental, physical, and sexual health.
